NBCUniversal has officially announced that it’s developing a live-action series based on the popular Fast & Furious movie franchise. Not one, but four series! Vin Diesel, a key star and producer, revealed this exciting news during the NBCUniversal upfront presentation.
“Peacock is launching four shows in the Fast and the Furious universe,” he said.
One of these series is confirmed to be on Peacock, while others are in different stages of development at Universal Television. Diesel is taking the lead as executive producer. The show’s pilot will be written by Mike Daniels, who recently received an NBC series order for a reboot of The Rockford Files. He’s previously teamed up with Wolfe Coleman on the NBC show Shades of Blue.
Details about the series are still under wraps. However, Diesel reassured fans that the quality of storytelling and character integrity will be a priority, especially since he has been protective of the franchise. He initially turned down the idea of sequels, feeling that the brand’s essence was too valuable to risk.
“We’ve realized that fans want more. They want us to expand on the legacy characters and their stories,” Diesel explained. After discussions with Universal Studios chief Donna Langley, he felt confident that the transition to television would maintain the brand’s integrity.
Diesel, along with Neal Moritz and Chris Morgan, is also producing an animated Fast & Furious series for Netflix through DreamWorks Animation.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Fast & Furious films. To celebrate, there’s a special screening of the original movie at the Cannes Film Festival, which Diesel and Moritz will attend. Over 11 films, the franchise has grossed over $7 billion worldwide, a testament to its global appeal. Fans can look forward to the final chapter, Fast Forever, set to hit theaters on March 17, 2028.
As the TV landscape evolves, the Fast & Furious franchise aims to connect with fans on a deeper level. With high expectations and a commitment to quality storytelling, it looks like the journey is far from over.
