A new sports event, the Enhanced Games, is set to kick off in Las Vegas this Sunday. What makes it unique? Athletes can use performance-enhancing drugs. This competition, informally called the “Steroid Olympics,” will feature 42 athletes in sports like swimming, track, and weightlifting.

Donald Trump Jr.’s firm, 1789 Capital, is backing the event alongside tech entrepreneur Peter Thiel, as they anticipate a bright future for competitive sports without traditional doping restrictions.
Before the inaugural games, the Enhanced Group, the company behind the event, saw its stock rise nearly 35%. However, it has also experienced a drop of roughly 40% since its recent entry onto the New York Stock Exchange. Trump Jr. has stated that the Enhanced Games symbolize “real competition” and the freedom to push boundaries.
The competition will take place in a specially-built arena that holds 2,500 spectators, who will also enjoy a performance by the rock band The Killers after the events. Athletes have undergone intense training, augmented by performance-enhancing substances that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves for use. While specifics about individual athletes remain private, it’s known they may take substances like testosterone, human growth hormones, and stimulants—substances that WADA typically bans.
Some notable athletes have decided to join this competition. Fred Kerley, the 2022 100m world champion and Olympic medalist, is on the roster. Australian swimmer James Magnussen, a multiple Olympic medalist, and U.S. gold medalist swimmer Cody Miller are also competing.
Beyond the games, the Enhanced Group has plans to commercialize performance-enhancing products. Earlier this year, they announced a line of health supplements and hormone replacement therapies aimed at various consumer needs. Their CEO, Maximilian Martin, claims this is just the beginning. They plan to invest in peptide-based products, which have surged in popularity lately. GLP-1 drugs, like Wegovy for weight loss, are a prime example of effective peptide therapies.
The Enhanced Games may reshape how we view competition and performance in sports. As the event develops, reactions from fans and athletes alike will likely shape its future.
