LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Trainer Chad Brown is on a winning streak. He recently celebrated his first Kentucky Oaks victory with Always a Runner, a filly who had only raced twice before and won both times. Today, he aims for the Kentucky Derby with Emerging Market, a colt in a similar boat.
Always a Runner, ridden by Jose Ortiz, surged ahead in the final stretch, beating Michael McCarthy’s Meaning by 1 1/4 lengths. Counting Stars claimed third place, just edging out Bob Baffert’s front-runner Explora.
Brown explained his approach, saying, “If it’s working, we’re going to keep doing it. Two starts and go.” Always a Runner finished the 1 1/8 miles in 1:48.82 and paid out $13.04, showing that experience isn’t everything.
The day at Churchill Downs was packed with drama. In other races, Corporate Power caused a stir by winning the $750,000 Alysheba. He overcame a stewards’ inquiry and was trained by Steve Asmussen, with Ortiz in the saddle. Recently, Baeza, a notable contender, was making his debut under trainer Bill Mott after a long break.
In the $500,000 Unbridled Sidney, Moon Spun pulled off a 13-1 upset, upsetting favorites like Queen Maxima and Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint winner Shisospicy. This victory added excitement to the already thrilling day.
Furthermore, in the $500,000 Modesty, Brown and Ortiz struck again with Kathynmarissa edging out her stablemate, Gezora, the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf champion.
One of the highlights was the $1 million La Troienne. Shred the Gnar, trained by Lynch and ridden by Luis Saez, managed to hold off the favorite Fully Subscribed.
In the nail-biting $600,000 Edgewood, four 3-year-old fillies crossed the line nearly simultaneously, but Imaginationthelady, with Tyler Gaffalione, ultimately took the win. In another 3-year-old fillies race, On Time Girl triumphed in the $700,000 Eight Belles, also with Irad Ortiz Jr. on board.
These races not only highlight the competitive spirit of horse racing but also reflect a trend towards younger, less experienced horses achieving remarkable success. Recent studies show that in horse racing, the experience gap is closing, with younger horses often outperforming seasoned competitors in major events.
