Phil Esposito, a Hockey Hall of Famer, shared his excitement about the upcoming Stadium Series in Tampa. “What Mr. Bettman explained about the logistics was fascinating. This is going to be something special. It’s big—really big,” he said.
The game kicks off just a day after the famous Gasparilla Pirate Fest. This festival includes a mock invasion by the legendary pirate Jose Gaspar, making it a festive backdrop for the event. The celebrations will blend hockey and pirate culture, creating a unique atmosphere in the city.
At a special “Invasion Luncheon,” attendees were welcomed by the Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla and the Bolts Blue Crew. They wanted to showcase the festive theme with pirate motifs in the Stadium Series logos. Former Lightning player Pat Maroon commented, “With Gasparilla in the mix, there’s going to be a lot of fun. Tampa is in for an unforgettable experience.”
Lightning chairman Jeff Vinik recalled his dreams of hosting an outdoor game back in 2010. After the NHL All-Star Game in 2018, the team started pushing for this idea. They even put up a billboard to catch the attention of NHL officials. It featured a design of Raymond James Stadium with an ice rink and a bold message: “NEXT TIME, LET’S GO OUTSIDE THE BOX!”
Previously, the Lightning played their only outdoor game in Nashville in 2022, where they won in front of 68,619 fans. Tampa Bay has sold out 437 consecutive home games, holding the longest active streak in the NHL.
Vinik highlighted the advancements that made this outdoor game possible. “The technology wasn’t there in 2010 or even in 2018. It’s a testament to everyone involved that we can host this event now.” He expressed his eagerness to showcase this “technological marvel” and share the experience with fans worldwide.
Reflecting on discussions from two years ago, Lightning owner Doug Ostrover admitted he was initially skeptical about hosting an outdoor game in Tampa’s warm climate. But after seeing the technology, his excitement grew. “People are going to be amazed,” he said, hinting that this event could surpass past outdoor games in other cities.
As this unique blend of hockey and local culture unfolds, it promises to be a historic moment for Tampa Bay, where the spirit of sports and community come together like never before.
