The Eastlink Curling Centre in Oliver is gearing up for a thrilling week as it hosts the 2025 AMJ Curl BC Mixed Curling Championships. This event will feature exciting curling action over four days, starting on March 27.
Marilyn Reimer, co-chair of the organizing committee, shared that 12 teams from across British Columbia will compete for the title and a chance to represent the province at the national championships in Assiniboia, Saskatchewan, later in the year.
“We kick things off Thursday at 2 p.m. with our opening draw, and it continues daily until the finals on Sunday afternoon,” Reimer noted.
Among the competitors are five teams from the Okanagan Valley, including two from Oliver and one from Osoyoos. Teams from Penticton, Kelowna, Victoria, Vancouver, and several other cities will also be in attendance, creating a robust field of talented players.
Reimer explained how events like this are secured. “Curl BC publishes a list of upcoming events, and clubs propose bids. Curl BC then makes the final selections, aiming to diversify the hosting locations.” Last year’s event took place in Langley.
Local enthusiasm for the event is palpable. Reimer remarked on the fantastic community support, both in terms of sponsorship and attendance. Local businesses have stepped up as sponsors, expressing a desire to be part of this prestigious competition.
“The support from across the valley has been incredible,” she added. While some host cities charge entry fees, this organizing committee decided to keep the event free to the public, encouraging everyone to come out and experience the excitement of curling.
With so many local teams competing, there’s a strong chance a team from the Okanagan could reach the semi-finals or the finals. Reimer hopes that local talent shines during the competition, but she also emphasizes the experience and camaraderie that comes from participating in such events.
The event should also boost the local economy, with the Coast Hotel serving as the host hotel. Carol Sheridan, the recreation director for Oliver, believes that the town’s excellent facilities played a significant role in bringing this event to the area. “It’s wonderful to host an event of this magnitude this time of year,” she said.
In recent years, curling has gained popularity across Canada, with increasing viewership and participation rates, especially among young athletes. For instance, a 2023 survey by Curl Canada indicated a 15% rise in junior curling registrations over the previous year, highlighting a growing interest in the sport. This championship not only showcases local talent but also contributes to the trend of promoting curling as a vibrant community sport.
