Copper Mountain in Colorado is getting ready to host World Cup ski races this Thanksgiving, and it promises to be an exciting event for fans. For four days, both men and women will compete on the slopes, which will be a special treat because it’s not common for both categories to race together at the same venue.
This will be the first time since December that such an event features both men and women. Back then, Beaver Creek hosted back-to-back races on its famous Birds of Prey course. Copper Mountain last hosted World Cup races in 2001, stepping in when Aspen couldn’t handle the snow conditions for the women’s races.
Thanksgiving will mark Copper’s fourth time welcoming World Cup skiing. The first event here was back in 1976, making it a historic location for this thrilling sport.
According to Sophie Goldschmidt, President and CEO of U.S. Ski & Snowboard, Copper Mountain is an excellent choice for these high-level competitions. With top-notch training facilities and a solid history of hosting international events, it’s well-equipped for showcasing world-class racing.
The resort has been known as “the Athlete’s Mountain” as it has supported both national and international athletes for preseason training. Dustin Lyman, the general manager, mentioned that the Stifel Copper Cup is a great fit for the resort and they’re thrilled to present their fantastic racing venue on such a grand scale.
The races are set just over two months before the Winter Olympics in Milan Cortina, Italy. During this event, the men will compete in super-G and giant slalom, while the women will race in giant slalom and slalom, which are specialties of the legendary skier Mikaela Shiffrin.
Although Shiffrin will miss racing in Killington, Vermont this year—her traditional Thanksgiving event—she expressed excitement for the races coming to Copper Mountain. Having roots in Vermont, she looks forward to the convenience of competing close to home and welcoming her community to witness the action.
This World Cup event at Copper Mountain is shaping up to be a highlight of the ski season. Fans can expect skilled athletes pushing their limits on the snow as they compete for glory.
