The U.S. Air Force is getting a new temporary Air Force One, a Boeing 747 donated by Qatar. This jet is currently being painted in the familiar red, white, and blue colors and is expected to be ready for President Donald Trump this summer.
Last year, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth accepted this luxury jet, raising questions about the ethics of receiving such a costly gift from a foreign country. Despite concerns about security and expenses, Trump argues that this arrangement will save taxpayer money. He plans to eventually donate the jet to a presidential library, similar to a past aircraft used by President Ronald Reagan.
The Qatar jet will serve as a “bridge” until new planes are ready for delivery, which is projected for 2028. The current Air Force One jets, flying for almost forty years, are due for a much-needed upgrade. Trump’s dissatisfaction with the aging aircraft has led him to showcase a model of a new jumbo jet, inspired by the design of his personal plane.
Boeing has been working on retrofitting the 747s, initially intended for a now-defunct Russian airline. This process has faced numerous challenges, including a subcontractor’s bankruptcy and difficulties in hiring staff who can pass stringent security checks.
The new planes won’t be operational until the end of Trump’s term, and he has expressed frustration over the delays. He has characterized the situation as a “total mess” and has noted that some foreign leaders have more luxurious planes.
The Qatari jet, often described as a “palace in the sky,” features exquisite furnishings and amenities. However, security remains the top priority for presidential travel. The existing Air Force One models include features to withstand nuclear blasts, anti-missile systems, and even an onboard operating room. It’s unclear what upgrades have been made to the former Qatari aircraft, and estimates for modifying it range as high as $1 billion.
In preparation for using the new jets, the Air Force has leased a 747-8 freighter for pilot training and purchased two additional jets from Lufthansa for spare parts. Interestingly, Boeing ceased production of the 747s in 2023, marking the end of an era for this iconic aircraft model.
