Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw is set to launch the extended Srinagar-Katra Vande Bharat Express service from Jammu Tawi Railway Station on April 30. This modern train, which originally traveled from Srinagar to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, will now reach Jammu Tawi, the largest city and railway hub in Jammu and Kashmir.
After the launch, the minister will inspect impressive engineering feats on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link, including the Anji Bridge and the Chenab Bridge.
In June 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced the Katra–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express, which started with eight coaches. Due to high demand and full bookings, the train’s capacity is being expanded to 20 coaches. This adjustment will ease the seating pressure, especially during peak travel times, catering to pilgrims and tourists alike. Those trying to secure seats will find it easier now, with reduced chances of being turned away.
The extended service will start routine operations from May 2, 2026, covering 266 km with two pairs of trains.
– The first service departs Jammu Tawi at 6:20 AM, stops at Katra and Reasi, and reaches Srinagar by 11:10 AM. It returns at 2:00 PM, arriving back in Jammu Tawi by 6:50 PM – running six days a week, except Tuesday.
– The second service leaves Srinagar at 8:00 AM, halting at Katra, and arrives in Jammu Tawi by 12:40 PM, returning at 1:20 PM and reaching Srinagar by 6:00 PM, also six days a week, except Wednesday.
This extension simplifies travel significantly. Previously, passengers arriving at Jammu Tawi, a key junction linked to major cities, had to switch trains or find alternate transport to get to Katra. Now, they can enjoy a direct ride to the holy site without any transfers, making travel more efficient.
According to recent statistics, rail travel in India has seen a surge in popularity, with passenger numbers rising by nearly 30% year-over-year as more people seek convenient and fast options for long-distance travel. This trend is especially notable during pilgrimage seasons when the demand for trains often outstrips supply.
This development aligns with the government’s broader initiative to improve rail infrastructure across the country, making journeys smoother and more accessible for everyone. The excitement surrounding this new service reflects a growing recognition of the importance of reliable transportation in enhancing tourism and local economies in the region.
