OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. – Excitement is building as the Singing River Health System prepares to unveil its new Healthcare Academy. This center offers six training programs, including a surgical technician apprenticeship.

John Herron, a certified surgical first assistant, emphasizes the importance of hands-on learning. “When I was a tech, I made mistakes in the OR, and it was tough. Here, students can learn in a safe place. They can practice, learn, and even fail without pressure,” he explains. This approach helps students prepare for real-life challenges in the operating room.

The academy uses a realistic mannequin named Alex for training. This life-like tool allows students to practice their skills and gain confidence before working with actual patients.

Richard Moore, an LPN/RN Workforce Development Educator, highlights the need for critical thinking in medical settings. “In this room, we challenge you to solve problems using what you’ve learned,” he says. By simulating real scenarios, students develop essential decision-making skills.

For students like Alana Williams, the benefits are clear. As a medical assistant student and mother, she appreciates the academy’s “earn-while-you-learn” program. “Getting paid while I study is a huge win for me,” she says.

The Healthcare Academy also offers apprenticeships in phlebotomy tech, pharmaceutical tech, and certified nursing assistant roles. This diverse range of programs aims to equip students for various roles in healthcare.
