Star Wars Outlaws is set to debut on the Switch 2 soon, marking Ubisoft’s first major release for the new console. However, there’s been a surprising lack of promotion. Many are wondering why Ubisoft isn’t more vocal about this highly anticipated title. One reason could be its performance issues on the new system.
This stealth adventure game, featuring gangsters and bounty hunters in the Galactic Empire, is currently one of the top sellers on the Switch 2 eShop due to digital pre-orders. Yet, you won’t see it showcased at PAX West this weekend. While fans can demo other significant titles like Elden Ring and Borderlands 4, Star Wars Outlaws is only available behind closed doors for select testers. According to a recent video by the GVG YouTube channel, they reported challenges with frame rates and graphic quality during their test of a demo level.
In their preview, GVG pointed out that while exploring a Star Destroyer and engaging in space battles, the frame rate frequently dropped below 30fps. The visual quality ranged from decent to subpar, depending on the scene. Unfortunately, they didn’t even get to experience any open-world gameplay on different planets.
Concerns about Star Wars Outlaws on Switch 2 have been lingering since the summer. During a Nintendo Direct, Ubisoft showed only a brief two-minute clip, mostly featuring developers speaking rather than actual gameplay. While some visual effects looked compelling, many observers felt that the game might be significantly downgraded compared to versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
Speculation suggests that Assassin’s Creed Shadows might also be coming to Switch 2. Recent earnings calls hint that Ubisoft is investing resources into optimizing this franchise. Given the popularity of Assassin’s Creed, it raises questions about whether Star Wars Outlaws is being overshadowed in developmental priority.
Currently, third-party ports for Switch 2 fall into two categories. On one side, there’s Cyberpunk 2077 and Street Fighter 6, which run smoothly and don’t heavily remind players of the hardware limitations. On the other side, titles like Hitman World of Assassination feel noticeably downgraded, despite being playable. Recently, some improvements have been made to this game, but players still feel a difference.
The situation with Elden Ring and now Star Wars Outlaws suggests these games are struggling more on the Switch 2. In contrast, Bandai Namco is facing similar challenges with their upcoming titles, indicating a broader issue of adaptation to the new console. Unless a significant day-one patch is introduced, there’s a growing concern about how well Assassin’s Creed Shadows might perform if it arrives on the Switch 2.
Ultimately, gamers will be watching closely to see if Ubisoft can address these performance issues. With fans eager for both these titles, the success of their ports could shape future releases on the platform.
