Jaime Mira, who helps run the food insecurity program at the Christian Center of Park City, points out a yearly trend: when the ski season ends, more workers turn to food pantries. “It’s a tradition here,” he says. “As the resorts and restaurants close, workers seek assistance. It happens every year.”
This season has been different. A sudden warm spell cut the ski season short, leaving many without work sooner than expected. With Deer Valley and Park City Mountain closing earlier, there’s been a noticeable increase in need.
Steve Richardson, the center’s Executive Director, notes several factors driving the surge in demand. “Gas prices are high, resorts are closed, and fewer tourists are around,” he explains. “Jobs are scarce, and people who usually work odd jobs have fewer opportunities.” As a result, many are relying on food pantries more than before.
While the Christian Center doesn’t ask why people need help, the pantry was bustling on a recent afternoon. Shoppers filled their carts with produce and other essentials, all provided through donations from local grocery stores and residents.
The center’s efforts don’t stop at the pantry. They also run mobile food pantries, delivering fresh food to various locations in Summit County and the Heber Valley. Typically, they start these mobile distributions in May, but this year, they recognized the urgent need and began early. The first drop-off is scheduled for April 21 at the Iron Horse Apartments.
The rising demand for food assistance reflects a broader pattern in the U.S. A recent survey by Feeding America shows that food insecurity affects one in eight Americans. The economic effects of the pandemic continue to linger, with many families still struggling to meet their basic needs.
