Get Set Baby movie review: Vinay Govind’s Get Set Baby attempts to be fresh and innovative, featuring Unni Mukundan and Nikhila Vimal in lead roles. However, it often falls short, leaving viewers puzzled. The film struggles with consistency in its themes and fails to blend the plot smoothly, making emotional moments feel disconnected.

The story follows Dr. Arjun Balakrishnan (Unni), a male gynecologist who runs a women’s wellness center specializing in in vitro fertilization (IVF). Initially compassionate, Arjun becomes consumed by his success. When he and his wife Swathy (Nikhila) face fertility issues, his obsession with reputation drives a wedge between them. His desperation leads him to take reckless actions, which further strains their relationship and tarnishes his professional life.

In a notable shift from past narratives, Get Set Baby portrays childbirth with sensitivity. While it doesn’t feature real deliveries like some earlier films, it reflects changing societal views. The director is commendable for handling delicate topics, presenting them without exaggeration. The film acknowledges the skepticism some patients might feel about consulting a male doctor, especially in such personal matters.

The movie also addresses the unrealistic pressure men face regarding fatherhood in society. This burden is amplified for Arjun, who has dedicated his career to helping couples become parents. However, the film’s insistence on traditional conception methods, while ignoring options like surrogacy or adoption, feels inconsistent with his medical background.

Despite its appealing settings, the film lacks vibrancy. The storytelling feels outdated, with scenes that seem disjointed and poorly developed. Rather than creating emotional connections, the narrative leans heavily on characters’ responses rather than dramatic tension. This is clear in a poorly executed dream sequence where Arjun confronts ridicule over his infertility — a missed opportunity to build the film’s emotional core.

Although viewers might relate to some of the events, the weak character development hampers engagement. The film tries to present itself as a family drama, yet it fails to create necessary tension, especially in crucial childbirth scenes.

One major flaw is Unni Mukundan’s performance, which feels stiff and unconvincing. His portrayal of Arjun lacks the depth required to show the character’s journey from good intentions to arrogance. Even when Arjun should display vulnerability, Unni’s delivery remains monotone, failing to connect emotionally with the audience. In contrast, Nikhila Vimal offers a stronger performance as Swathy, although her character doesn’t significantly influence the story’s direction, leading to an apparent lack of chemistry between the leads.

While supporting actors like Chemban Vinod Jose and Surabhi Lakshmi do well, there are missed opportunities, particularly with other characters that are underwritten. The film’s soundtrack, composed by Sam CS, fails to leave a memorable impact, and the cinematography and editing offer only modest contributions.
