The Grand Traverse County Health Department is holding a walk-in clinic for flu and COVID-19 vaccines on Thursday, December 11, from 8:30 AM to 4 PM at 2600 LaFranier Road. They’ll take a break for lunch from 12 PM to 1 PM.
This clinic is open to everyone, regardless of insurance status. Health Officer Mike Lahey emphasizes the importance of vaccinations during the winter months. “With the respiratory season in full swing and the holidays approaching, we want to keep everyone safe,” he said. “Getting vaccinated and practicing hygiene are crucial for protecting yourself and your community. Remember, it takes up to two weeks to build immunity after vaccination, so it’s wise to act now.”
Vaccinating against both flu and COVID-19 can significantly reduce the chances of serious illness, shorten recovery time, and lower hospital visits. This is particularly important during the winter months when illnesses often surge. Health experts suggest that avoiding the flu and COVID-19 can also lead to fewer missed days from work or school.
If you prefer to schedule an appointment instead of walking in, you can call GTCHD at 231-995-6131. For more details about their immunization program, you can visit the Health Department’s website.
As a note, studies show that flu vaccine uptake can reduce the severity of the illness even if you do get sick. According to the CDC, vaccination can cut the risk of flu-related hospitalization by over 50%. So, it really pays off to get vaccinated!
