Get Winter-Ready: Essential Tips and Updates on Weather-Related News You Can’t Miss!

When winter hits, it can disrupt life at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL). Students, faculty, and staff should be ready for remote work or study during severe weather. Here’s what you need to know.

Stay Informed

UNL will notify everyone about closures through UNL Alert. This free service sends emails and texts about weather-related changes. It’s a good idea for everyone to sign up here.

Besides UNL Alert, you can find updates on:

What to Expect with Class and Work

If you hear “campus closed,” it doesn’t always mean classes are canceled. Here are the scenarios you might encounter:

  • Campus closed, classes canceled: Stay home. No classes today. You can relax or catch up on work.
  • Campus closed, instructional continuity: Stay home. Classes won’t happen in-person, but your instructor will provide guidance through syllabi. This might include assignments or online lectures.
  • UNL open: Everything runs as usual. Classes and events are happening, even if other local schools are closed.

When it’s not clear, check the university’s homepage for confirmation.

Work Guidelines

For most employees, if UNL is closed, you should stay home. Some roles are essential, like police and maintenance personnel. These workers are informed of their status upon hiring. If you’re uncertain about your status during a weather event, reach out to your supervisor.

  • If you can work remotely, do so—but you won’t get inclement weather pay.
  • If you can’t work and have no alternative tasks, you’ll still receive your regular pay.

According to a recent HR policy, inclement weather closure pay rules have been in effect since May 2021. You can read more about it here.

Events and Facilities

Winter storms may also impact campus events. For athletic or performing arts events, always check ahead via phone or social media to confirm if they’re still happening. Don’t forget to verify the hours for facilities like Campus Recreation and the University Health Center.

Final Thoughts

Adapting to unexpected winter weather is key for everyone at UNL. Staying informed through official channels will help you navigate closures smoothly. As a community, we can support each other during challenging weather conditions.
