Giants Hire Tennessee’s Vitello: A Bold Move in College Coaching with No Pro Experience!

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The San Francisco Giants have taken an interesting step by hiring Tony Vitello, the former University of Tennessee coach, as their new manager. This marks a significant shift as Vitello is stepping into professional baseball for the first time.

Giants president Buster Posey made this bold decision, highlighting Vitello’s reputation as a bright and innovative leader in college baseball. “Tony’s commitment to developing players is impressive,” said Posey. He believes Vitello’s energy and passion will resonate well with the team.

Vitello has a successful track record with the Volunteers. Since taking over in June 2017, he led the team to its first NCAA baseball title in 2024, along with several other notable achievements, such as six regional appearances and three College World Series trips. Notably, 10 of his players were chosen in the first round of the MLB draft, including Giants outfielder Drew Gilbert.

The Giants have struggled, missing the playoffs for four consecutive years. Seeking fresh leadership, Posey considered various candidates but ultimately chose Vitello, reminiscent of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys when they hired college coach Jimmy Johnson, who went on to win two Super Bowls.

The Giants also recently parted ways with manager Bob Melvin, reflecting a broader trend in sports organizations seeking stability. This decision comes after a season where the Giants finished with an even record of 81-81, their first playoff appearance since their franchise record of 107 wins in 2021.

Vitello’s coaching style has been colorful and sometimes controversial. He faced suspensions during his college career for his passionate, sometimes overzealous, interactions with officials. Nonetheless, this has made him a memorable figure in the sport.

In addition, he is no stranger to California, having previously coached in the state. Vitello’s coaching journey began at Missouri, followed by successful stints at other institutions like TCU and Arkansas.
