GLENVILLE, W.Va.— The fall semester kicked off at Glenville State University this Monday after a lively welcome week.
“This is truly the best time of the year,” said Dr. Mark Manchin, the university president. “The joy and energy our students bring back to campus each fall is unmatched. Watching them reconnect, meet new friends, and embark on their academic journey reminds us why we’re here.”
This year’s freshman class is one of the largest in recent years. Just last week, many students engaged in welcome week events, showcasing GSU’s effective recruitment and retention efforts.
Duane Chapman, the Vice President of Enrollment and Student Affairs, noted, “We’re excited to see not only new students enrolling but also more returning ones getting involved early. Our focus on building connections and offering meaningful experiences is clearly resonating.”
GSU saw a remarkable 10% increase in enrollment last year, now boasting over 1,600 students. This trend aligns with broader national statistics that show many universities are focusing on student engagement to boost retention. According to the National Student Clearinghouse, enrollment decreased by 3.1% across U.S. colleges during the last academic year, highlighting GSU’s success amidst national challenges.
Moreover, an interesting trend on social media has emerged, with students sharing their first-day experiences and reconnecting with friends online, showcasing the strong community vibe at GSU.
As students settle back into college life, their energy and enthusiasm could indicate a positive year ahead, both academically and socially. With the current support structure in place, GSU is not just another university; it’s a thriving community ready for success.
