Glenwood Springs Teacher Receives Prestigious National Award for Excellence in Science Education!

Autumn Rivera has been a dedicated science teacher at Glenwood Springs Middle School for over ten years. This week, she was honored with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. This is the highest award for K-12 educators in the United States, showcasing her commitment to inspiring students.

Rivera is known for her innovative teaching methods. One of her key contributions is the “Crews” program. This daily initiative fosters strong connections between students and teachers. It focuses on their emotional, social, and academic needs, making it an essential part of the school’s mission to help kids succeed.

Rivera shared her surprise at receiving this award, saying, “I started this journey before I was named Teacher of the Year. I owe much of my success to the support from my wonderful colleagues and the district science team.”

Her teaching career began at Janitell Junior High School near Colorado Springs in 2005. By 2012, she found her passion in teaching sixth-grade science at Glenwood Springs Middle School. Her classroom is a hub of curiosity and creativity, where students are encouraged to explore and learn.

Eric Olsen, the principal of Glenwood Springs Middle School, praised Rivera’s achievements: “Autumn continues to impress us. This recognition highlights her talent and dedication to education.”

Rivera’s influence goes beyond just her classroom. She was also named the 2023 Educator of the Year by the Association for Middle Level Education, recognizing her impact on education far and wide.

Another recipient of the prestigious award this year is Linda Flohr, a former physics teacher at Glenwood Springs High School, now an assistant principal at West Middle School in Mesa County.

Superintendent Anna Cole of the Roaring Fork School District expressed pride in both educators’ achievements, emphasizing the significance of their recognition for the community.

As part of the award, Rivera and Flohr will receive $10,000 from the National Science Foundation and will attend recognition events in Washington, D.C., alongside other awardees.
