Six of Taiwan’s diplomatic allies made strong statements in support of Taiwan at the recent UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belem, Brazil. Paraguay took a significant step by formally backing Taiwan’s participation in the convention.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed gratitude for this support. They emphasized that Taiwan is eager to play its part in global environmental efforts and collaborate with other nations to tackle climate change effectively.
Marshallese Minister Bremity Lakjohn highlighted the importance of including Taiwan, noting its substantial contributions. He pointed out that the conference’s focus on “global mutirao” should recognize Taiwan’s experience in combating climate issues.
The term “mutirao” describes a collective mobilization strategy that extends beyond the conference itself, encouraging ongoing collaboration.
Haitian Environment Minister Joseph Emmanuel Philippe echoed this sentiment. He urged a more inclusive approach, suggesting that Taiwan’s involvement would help restore trust in multilateral efforts to transition towards sustainable practices.
Belize’s Minister of Sustainable Development, Orlando Habet, underscored the importance of allowing capable partners like Taiwan to contribute meaningfully to UN climate discussions. He mentioned Taiwan’s innovative clean energy solutions and support for climate-vulnerable countries as critical assets that should not be overlooked.
Similarly, Saint Kitts and Nevis Minister Joyelle Clarke voiced support for Taiwan. She stressed that the battle against climate change transcends borders and should include perspectives from all nations.
Guatemalan Vice Minister Edwin Castellanos noted Taiwan’s significant contributions to carbon pricing and reduction initiatives, showcasing Taiwan’s commitment to achieving net zero emissions.
In addition, Saint Lucian Parliamentary Secretary Pauline Antoine-Prospere pointed out that climate change impacts everyone. She called for the UN climate convention and the Paris Agreement to include Taiwan, aligning with the spirit of collective action emphasized at COP30.
This growing global advocacy reflects a broader trend within international relations. More nations are recognizing the importance of working together to combat climate change, and Taiwan’s involvement could greatly enhance these efforts.
As climate change remains a pressing issue, the calls for Taiwan’s inclusion in global discussions highlight a shifting perspective towards more inclusive and collaborative environmental governance.
