Global Leaders Share Congrats as Trump Takes Office: What Their Messages Mean for His Presidency

On Monday, global leaders congratulated Donald Trump as he officially became the 47th president of the United States.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was quick to share his support. He praised Trump’s focus on strong leadership and expressed hope for lasting peace through his proposed policies, especially as the third anniversary of the Russia-Ukraine war approaches.

Previously, Trump stated he could end the conflict quickly, but his advisers now suggest that a resolution might take much longer. Trump has also raised questions about continued U.S. military support for Ukraine.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also extended his congratulations. He expressed optimism about strengthening U.S.-Israeli ties and looked forward to working with Trump on critical issues, such as returning hostages and addressing security threats posed by Hamas. This comes as a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas was established just before Trump took office.

Other leaders, like NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, joined in sending their congratulations. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized the importance of the transatlantic relationship, while British Prime Minister Keir Starmer highlighted the deep history of cooperation between the U.S. and the U.K.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who attended the inauguration, expressed her confidence that collaboration between Italy and the U.S. would continue to grow.

However, not all responses were positive. Panama’s President Jose Raul Mulino criticized Trump for remarks about the Panama Canal in his inaugural speech, stating that Panama rejected any suggestion of U.S. control over the canal, which was fully handed back to Panama in 1999.

This mix of congratulatory messages and critiques reflects the varying expectations and concerns that leaders around the world have as Trump begins his presidency.
