Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) recently handed over the ICGS Akshar, the second of eight Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs) being built for the Indian Coast Guard. This event is part of the Indian government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, which aims to boost self-reliance in defense capabilities.
The ceremony featured notable figures from the Indian Coast Guard, including Shri Brajesh Kumar Upadhyay, the Chairman & Managing Director, and RAdm Nelson D’Souza, a retired Naval officer and Director (Operations).
ICGS Akshar stands out due to its emphasis on innovation and self-reliance. At 51.43 meters long and 8 meters wide, it displaces 330 tonnes with a draught of 2.5 meters. Unique to this class, it features twin marine diesel engines with controllable pitch propellers (CPP), enhancing its propulsion efficiency.
This vessel boasts a top speed of over 27 knots and can travel 1,500 nautical miles without refueling. It also includes an advanced machinery control system, ensuring it remains operationally ready.
ICGS Akshar will be manned by six officers and 35 sailors. Its primary roles include fisheries protection, Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) surveillance, coastal patrol, anti-smuggling, anti-piracy, and search and rescue operations. This makes it a vital asset in strengthening India’s coastal security.
The delivery of ICGS Akshar reflects GSL’s commitment to enhancing maritime security and fulfilling India’s strategic objectives. It also underscores GSL’s role in the Make in India initiative, as the ship showcases the leap in indigenous design and construction.
As India positions itself as a global leader in shipbuilding, GSL continues to drive advancements in defense technology, thus expanding the nation’s blue economy. A report from the Ministry of Shipping highlights that the Indian maritime sector is set for significant growth, projected to create over 1 million jobs by 2030. This aligns with GSL’s mission and vision for a robust maritime future.
With ICGS Akshar now operational, India takes a strong step towards enhancing its maritime capabilities and safeguarding its waters.
