WACO, Texas – Good news for residents: there are currently no measles cases in McLennan County. This comes after a potential exposure led to a brief closure of the Baylor Scott and White Hillcrest hospital’s Medical Office Building 2.

Texas is experiencing a rise in measles cases, with nearly 500 confirmed statewide. The hospital closed to ensure a thorough cleaning and sent a sample for testing to rule out any risks.

Measles is one of the most contagious viruses out there. According to the CDC, there are outbreaks in 22 states, including Texas. So, hospitals are taking every precaution to prevent the virus from spreading.

Dr. Tim Martindale, a family physician, emphasizes that if you’re in the same room with someone who has measles, you’re at serious risk unless you’ve been vaccinated. Symptoms can appear deceptively mild at first, resembling a cold. However, five days after the initial symptoms, a rash typically surfaces, starting at the head and spreading downward.

The urgency around measles is due to its potential complications. Dr. Jamie Avila, a pediatrician at Baylor Scott & White McLane Children’s Medical Center, notes that about one in five people who contract measles will need hospitalization for various complications. Alarmingly, one in a thousand cases can be fatal.
