Microsoft has decided to end support for Windows 11 SE next year, just five years after it launched. This operating system was designed for low-cost laptops aimed at schools, trying to compete with Google Chromebooks.
Starting in October 2026, Microsoft will stop providing software updates, technical support, and security fixes for Windows 11 SE. While existing devices will still work, Microsoft suggests moving to another version of Windows 11 for better security and support.
Interestingly, Microsoft will not provide the upcoming 25H2 update for Windows 11 SE. As a result, devices will stay on the 24H2 version until support ends. Several laptop manufacturers, such as Acer, Asus, and HP, have created devices using this operating system. Microsoft even introduced its own budget laptop, the Surface Laptop SE, in 2021.
Historically, Microsoft has struggled to compete with Chrome OS. They previously tried a lock-down version of Windows 10 called S Mode, which limited users to apps from the Microsoft Store. This frustrated many due to the lack of available apps.
Windows 11 SE followed a similar approach, prioritizing Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) over traditional desktop applications. IT admins faced challenges as they had to create exceptions for devices to run standard apps, with Microsoft overseeing a strict list of approved software.
This decision to end Windows 11 SE comes after reports that Chromebooks are losing market share. A study by Gartner highlighted that Chromebook shipments have declined since 2022, pointing to limited functionality and lower build quality as issues. Instead, many users seem more interested in upgrading to Windows 11, indicating a shift in preference back to traditional PCs.
As tech continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how this affects education technology and the devices students use. Keeping up with changing demands in schools may be as crucial as the technology itself.
