In Dublin, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell shared exciting news about the league’s international expansion. He noted that convincing teams to play overseas has become much easier. Instead of having to persuade teams to participate, they are now eager to join in these global games.
“In today’s world, we have to be global,” Goodell stated. He emphasized that fans want more international games. With growing interest, he believes the NFL can truly become a worldwide sensation, saying, “Our job is to share our game with the rest of the world.”
Because of this positive response, Goodell aims for each NFL team to play one international game annually, targeting a total of 16 international matchups. The league plans to debut a game in Australia in 2026, with Asia likely next on the agenda.
Goodell highlighted the significance of the first regular-season game in Ireland between the Minnesota Vikings and Pittsburgh Steelers at Croke Park. The Steelers have strong connections to Ireland, thanks to the Rooney family’s heritage. The late Dan Rooney even served as the U.S. ambassador to Ireland, making this matchup particularly meaningful. Steelers owner Art Rooney II humorously noted that the team pushed hard for this event.
Typically, international NFL games see around 90% of attendees from the host country. However, Goodell anticipates that this game will attract at least 30% of fans from the U.S. He expressed confidence in the event’s success, saying, “I have no doubt we’ll be back.”
The NFL’s international strategy isn’t just about expanding its fan base. According to recent surveys, 52% of NFL fans support playing more games abroad. This means the appetite for international NFL events is growing. As the game spreads globally, it can foster connections among fans from different cultures, enhancing the overall experience of the sport.
As the league continues to embrace this global vision, it’s clear that American football is ready to reach new heights and audiences. The future of the NFL looks bright, and fans worldwide are eager to join the action.
