This past weekend, many Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio users ran into a frustrating issue. They received an “Untrusted device” error message, making it impossible to cast their favorite shows and music. 9to5Google reported on the situation, detailing the complications faced by users.

On Wednesday, Google reached out via email to those impacted, acknowledging the problem and assuring them that they are working quickly to fix it. The message stated:

“We’re contacting you because of a disruption affecting Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio devices. We apologize for the issue and understand your frustration. We are working to roll out a fix as soon as possible and will share updates and guidance on the Nest Community page. We appreciate your patience as we resolve this issue.”

This email followed a post on the Nest Community page that gave users a heads-up about the ongoing issues. Importantly, they advised against factory resetting the devices, as this might lead to even more complications.

The 2nd gen Chromecast and Chromecast Audio were both launched in 2015, and thankfully, users of the newer Chromecast models (from the 3rd generation onward) are not experiencing these issues. Features like time displays, screensavers, and weather information still work perfectly for those devices; however, casting music and video remains troublesome.

The reason behind this glitch is still unclear. Some speculate it could be linked to a certificate expiration on March 9, coinciding with the initial reports of the issue. One Reddit user suggested that this certificate might be the root cause.

Interestingly, there was early speculation that Google might intentionally be disabling older devices, especially since the 2nd gen Chromecast was officially discontinued last year when the company introduced the Google TV Streamer. It sparked conversations online, with users expressing their frustrations and concerns about relying on devices that are no longer supported.
