Google Apologizes: Lost Maps Timeline Data for Some Users – What You Need to Know

Recently, Google Maps users have faced a frustrating issue: their Timeline data, which keeps track of previous locations, has vanished. Many took to social media, like Reddit, to voice their concerns. Google has now admitted that a technical mistake led to this deletion. Unfortunately, those without cloud backups cannot recover their lost data.

In an email to The Verge, Google spokesperson Genevieve Park explained, "We briefly experienced a technical issue that caused the deletion of Timeline data for some people. Nearly everyone with encrypted Timeline backups will be able to restore their data; unfortunately, those who did not have backups enabled will not be able to recover lost data."

Users have reported receiving a similar message from Google, detailing how to restore their data if they had enabled backups. To check if this feature is on, users can tap their profile icon in the Google Maps app, go to “Your timeline,” and look for a cloud icon. If it’s marked with an arrow, backups are enabled. If it has a line through it, backups are off, and users can tap the icon to change their settings.

This incident comes after Google announced a shift last summer, moving to on-device storage for location data aimed at enhancing user privacy. While this means less data is stored on Google’s servers, it also raises risks of sudden data loss, as demonstrated by this recent issue.

Interestingly, a survey from the Pew Research Center revealed that 69% of Americans feel concerned about their digital privacy, highlighting the importance of this matter. More tech experts are discussing the trade-offs between convenience and control over personal data, which adds to the ongoing conversation about digital safety.

While Google Maps users can export their location history, there’s no straightforward way to restore non-cloud data, leaving many feeling vulnerable. It’s a reminder of the importance of backup options in our digital lives.
