Google is enhancing its Fitbit Air product by allowing users to create their own accessories through its swappable pebble design. This initiative aims to encourage creativity among users and independent designers.
Following the launch of the Fitbit Air tracker last month, Google noted that the community has already developed various innovative ideas to customize their devices. In response, the company has released its hardware specifications and accessory design guidelines to the public.
This information, usually restricted to third-party accessory companies, is now accessible to “independent designers and artisan makers.” Google has also provided 2D CAD drawings of the pebble and the sleeve used in the Performance Loop Band.
These CAD drawings include essential details such as mating dimensions, tolerances, and specifications for attach and detach forces to assist in creating high-quality accessory bands.
A Google Store page outlines several considerations for accessory developers:
- Sensor Clearance: The optical heart rate and SpO2 sensors must remain unobstructed and in consistent contact with the skin to ensure optimal performance.
- Sensor Pressure: Accessories should provide sustained contact pressure of at least 35 mmhg (0.68psi) for effective PPG performance in motion.
- Secure Retention: Accessories must follow CAD tolerances to ensure that the tracker is securely locked during activity while still being easy to remove.
- Skin-friendly Materials: Accessories should be made from materials that help prevent skin irritation or allergic reactions, adhering to specific chemical limits and testing requirements.
