Google has decided to remove its AI assistant, Gemini, from the main Google app for iOS. This change aims to push users to download the standalone Gemini app instead. The goal? To take on popular AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Claude. But, this shift might lower Gemini’s user base since many users already rely on the Google app and may not want to download another app.
Google notified users about this change through an email, stating, “Gemini is no longer available in the Google app.”
The email encouraged users who wish to continue using Gemini on iOS to download the app from the App Store. This app became available to iOS users worldwide last year, but until now, Gemini was also accessible in the main Google app.
With the new Gemini app for iOS, users can have voice chats with the AI assistant using Gemini Live. They can connect it with other Google apps like Search, YouTube, Maps, and Gmail. Users can ask questions, plan trips, get summaries, create images, and more. Interactions can happen via text, voice, or even the camera.
The email reminded users that Gemini may still make mistakes, suggesting they should double-check the responses they get.
Users looking for advanced features can also upgrade to a paid subscription via the iOS app, which includes Google One AI Premium as an in-app option.
If users try to access Gemini in the main Google app, they will see a message informing them that “Gemini now has its own app,” along with a link to download it from the App Store.
This strategy could be risky for Google. While it might allow for faster updates and new features in the standalone app, there’s a chance that some users may not switch, leading to a drop in Gemini’s usage.
