Google’s Impact in 2024: INR 4 Lakh Crore in App Revenue and Thriving Developer Jobs in India

Google recently announced a major milestone: it generated ₹4 lakh crore in app revenue in India for 2024. This impressive figure highlights how much the tech giant is investing in the country’s digital landscape.

According to Public First, a research consultancy, Google praised Indian developers and startups for their significant contributions, particularly in the field of artificial intelligence. They noted that the Google Play and Android ecosystem not only benefited app publishers but also the wider economy.

The ecosystem has led to the creation of around 35 lakh jobs—both direct and indirect. India now boasts the second-largest number of active developers on Google Play worldwide, adding over 10 lakh developer jobs in 2024 alone. This trend is vital for pushing India’s digital economy forward and making it more inclusive.

Dr. Manish Gupta from Google DeepMind shared that Indian developers are playing a key role in shaping the future. They are harnessing AI to develop applications that impact millions of users both in India and globally.

Google is also supporting local talent by providing essential tools and platforms. Preeti Lobana, Google’s Country Manager for India, stated that they are fostering an “AI Productivity Leap,” driving innovation among businesses and startups.

At the recent Google I/O Connect India 2025 event in Bengaluru, the company introduced its Gemini 2.5 Flash model and new Agentic AI tools. These initiatives aim to further empower Indian developers. Google is also collaborating with several Indian AI startups to create advanced solutions that align with the country’s Make-in-India initiative.

Additionally, Google is focusing on improving Google Maps. They plan to expand accurate data to include over 250 million locations globally, allowing developers to enhance their generative AI features.

In a fast-evolving digital environment, India is poised to become a frontrunner in technology innovation, thanks in part to strategic partnerships and support from industry leaders like Google. This transformation echoes the historical shift seen in the tech landscape from earlier decades when access to digital tools was limited. Now, with extensive resources at their fingertips, Indian developers are truly positioned to drive change on a global scale.
