Gotham Film Awards 2023: ‘One Battle After Another’ Takes Best Feature, while Jafar Panahi’s ‘It Was Just an Accident’ Dominates with Multiple Wins!

Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another won Best Feature at the 2025 Gotham Film Awards. This event was particularly poignant for Jafar Panahi, who learned he had been sentenced to a year in prison in absentia just hours before. Despite this, his film It Was Just an Accident took home three awards, including Best International Feature and Best Original Screenplay.

In his acceptance speech, Panahi, through a translator, honored independent filmmakers in Iran and beyond. He emphasized their unwavering resolve in telling stories, often at great personal risk. Panahi reflected on a past experience as a student filmmaker, where he destroyed an unfinished work, acknowledging that this choice shaped his journey and led him to the success he enjoys today.

The ceremony also recognized My Father’s Shadow, which won for Breakthrough Director and Outstanding Lead Performance. Sopé Dìrísù’s victory was especially noteworthy as he triumphed over Hollywood giants like Jessie Buckley and Jennifer Lawrence.

Wunmi Mosaku received the Best Supporting Performance award for her role in Sinners, despite being unable to attend. Director Ryan Coogler accepted on her behalf.

Anderson expressed surprise at winning Best Feature, considering the heavy competition. Notably, he used the occasion to celebrate his partner, Maya Rudolph, honoring their 24-year partnership.

This year, the Gothams expanded their Best Feature category from five to ten nominees. Other contenders included If I Had Legs I’d Kick You and Train Dreams, among others.

The event also honored contributions from various filmmakers, including Noah Baumbach, who shared his journey. He joked about past days when the Gothams focused on lower-budget films, humorously invoking memories of actors being paid in “potato skins.”

The 2025 Gotham Film Awards reflected a significant shift in the film industry. Chris Rock and Naomi Watts remarked on how independent films today focus more on unique narratives rather than budgets. This sentiment resonates with current trends, emphasizing authentic storytelling that reflects diverse perspectives.

For background, the Gotham Awards have celebrated independent film since 2000, acknowledging works that often push boundaries and challenge traditional norms. Recent winners list includes acclaimed films like Everything Everywhere All at Once and Moonlight, showcasing the awards’ commitment to recognizing exceptional talent.

As the film landscape evolves, this year’s ceremony served as a reminder of the power of storytelling, community, and courage in the face of adversity.
