Gov. Greg Abbott Champions Online Sports Betting: Insights from His Latest Podcast Interview

Governor Greg Abbott announced his support for online sports betting in Texas. This marks a notable shift, as it’s the first time he has endorsed any form of legalized gambling in the state.

In a recent episode of the Texas Take Podcast by the Houston Chronicle, he stated, “I don’t have a problem with online sports betting. The reality is that I’d be shocked if there were not some Texans that do it already.”

Senator Carol Alvarado expressed her optimism about Abbott’s comments, saying, “It’s encouraging. We’ve seen people over the last couple of sessions evolve and be open and supportive of it.” Alvarado has been advocating for legalized sports betting and casinos since 2009, believing it could diversify Texas’s economy and attract visitors.

Abbott’s support comes at a time when sports betting has gained popularity, especially with significant events like the recent blockbuster NBA trade. Luka Doncic’s move from the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers highlights the growing intersection of sports and gambling. It’s interesting to note that the Mavericks are owned by the family behind the Las Vegas Sands Casino.

Alvarado plans to continue pushing legislation that could pave the way for more extensive gambling options in Texas. However, making casino gambling a reality remains challenging due to various opposing interests. Currently, Abbott’s support is focused solely on online sports betting, leaving the future of casino gambling uncertain.
