New Delhi, Dec 16 (PTI) – Climate change is hitting rural women hard, increasing their workload and vulnerability. The Indian government highlighted this issue in the Lok Sabha.
In its recent report to the UN, the environment ministry noted that climate extremes are straining women’s roles, especially in agriculture. Erratic rainfall and extreme weather can lead to significant harvest losses, impacting their food supply and income.
Minister of State for Environment, Kirti Vardhan Singh, pointed out that these climate changes often affect sectors where women are primary players. This includes farming crops like paddy, cotton, and tea, as well as fishing.
Surprisingly, around 65% of Indian women work in agriculture. They make up about 30% of cultivators and hold nearly 43% of agricultural jobs. This reliance on farming makes them particularly susceptible to climate shifts.
To tackle these challenges, the government has rolled out several initiatives. Programs like the National Programme on Climate Change and Human Health and the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana aim to boost resilience among women by addressing climate-related risks. Others like Jal Jeevan Mission and Swachh Bharat Mission are also designed to enhance living conditions.
According to the India Meteorological Department, regions with agriculture-dependent communities face the most significant impacts of climate change. This statistic means that as the climate grows more unpredictable, the struggles for rural women will continue to escalate.
