New Delhi, February 20: The government has signed a contract with Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) to purchase 149 software-defined radios for the Indian Coast Guard. The total cost is ₹1,220.12 crore.
This agreement, made under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category, will help the Coast Guard improve secure information sharing and communication. The new radios will provide high-speed data transfer and secure voice communication, enhancing situational awareness.
The introduction of these advanced radios will boost the Coast Guard’s ability to carry out its essential duties, such as maritime law enforcement, search and rescue missions, protecting fisheries, and safeguarding the marine environment. It will also improve cooperation during joint operations with the Indian Navy.
The project is seen as a vital move to strengthen the Coast Guard’s capabilities. It aligns with the government’s goals of enhancing maritime security and supporting the ‘Blue Economy’. Additionally, this initiative supports the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ program by promoting domestic manufacturing of advanced military communication systems, which will help create jobs and develop local expertise.
Earlier this month, the Ministry of Defence also signed a contract worth ₹642 crore with BEL for 28 EON-51 systems for the Indian Navy. These systems use electro-optical and thermal imaging to detect and classify targets. This procurement is part of equipping 11 New Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels and three Cadet Training Ships.
In recent weeks, BEL has secured additional orders totaling ₹531 crore, which include advanced communication systems for ships and various electronic equipment.
These developments are set to enhance the capabilities of India’s defense forces while also fostering local industry growth.
