The Federal Government is committed to tackling food security issues in Nigeria, ensuring that no one goes to bed hungry. This pledge was reaffirmed by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Abubakar Kyari, at the Green Agric West Africa Expo (GAWA) 2025 held in Lagos.
During the expo, which focused on “Green Agriculture: The Path to Food Self-Sufficiency in West Africa,” Kyari emphasized the need for comprehensive strategies to address food insecurity. He highlighted the importance of investing in sustainable agriculture practices, including modern techniques like irrigation and green technology.
Kyari noted that while palliative measures provide immediate relief, they are not long-term solutions. To truly combat food insecurity, Nigeria must focus on medium- and long-term investments in agriculture. He pointed out that as the population grows, the need for a dependable food supply becomes increasingly crucial.
Agriculture is vital for West Africa’s economies, and the minister stressed that adopting policies promoting nutritious food and sustainable farming methods is essential. He urged for the creation of networking opportunities for businesses and entrepreneurs in agriculture, highlighting the role of the private sector in driving progress.
At GAWA 2025, experts also spoke on the necessity of timely access to credit for farmers. Prof. Lateef Sanni from the Nigeria Stock Product Research Institute emphasized that supporting youth in farming careers is critical. He called for the government to provide credit facilities at lower interest rates to encourage this shift.
Mr. Abiodun Olaniyi, the event host, underscored the urgency of adapting agricultural practices to meet changing climate conditions. He noted the importance of regenerative agriculture to enhance soil health and sustainability in farming.
In summary, the GAWA 2025 aimed to foster a resilient and thriving agricultural landscape in West Africa, outlining the vital steps towards achieving food security and sustainability.
