Wajir County in Kenya has just taken a significant step towards tackling climate change. Governor Ahmed Abdullahi recently signed the Wajir County Climate Change Act, 2025. This new law aims to strengthen climate resilience and make sure that climate issues are included in local planning and development.
Wajir is situated in an area known as Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs). This region faces severe challenges due to climate change, including prolonged droughts, erratic rainfall, and rising temperatures. Over the years, these changes have greatly impacted the lives of local pastoralists who depend on livestock for their income and food.
Droughts have become more common and last longer. This has led to significant livestock losses, lower milk production, and growing food insecurity. Many families now travel far distances in search of water and pasture, often facing danger along the way.
The new Climate Change Act is seen as vital. Governor Abdullahi expressed gratitude to the County Assembly for their support in passing this law, which aims to protect local livelihoods and promote a sustainable future. He said it provides a solid legal framework to address the ongoing climate crises.
Sahal Mugow, the chair of the water, energy, and climate committee, emphasized that the Act will help organize and strengthen responses to climate change. It will enhance adaptation measures, promote sustainable living, and ensure fair use of climate funds. Importantly, the Act also seeks to integrate local knowledge and improve early warning systems for natural disasters.
Recent statistics highlight the urgency of this legislation: according to a 2022 report by the World Bank, climate events have pushed over 5 million people in Kenya into food insecurity. This underscores the critical nature of Wajir’s new law.
