Governor Convenes Special Session to Promote the New ‘Education Freedom Act’: What You Need to Know

Nashville, TN – Governor Bill Lee has called a special session of the Tennessee General Assembly for January 27, 2025. The main focus will be the Education Freedom Act, which aims to give parents more choices in education. The session will also consider new public safety measures related to illegal immigration, especially with changes expected under the incoming Trump Administration.

In addition, Governor Lee plans to introduce a disaster relief package to support recovery from Hurricane Helene and prepare for future natural disasters. He emphasized the need for quick action on issues that are important to Tennesseans.

“Tennessee has a responsibility to tackle these pressing issues,” he said. “There is strong support for the Education Freedom Act and for helping communities affected by Hurricane Helene. Many Tennesseans want more options for their children’s education and resources for public schools.” The governor noted that Hurricane Helene severely impacted rural and vulnerable areas, which struggle to meet their local funding needs for federal disaster relief. The state aims to work closely with these counties and find creative solutions for recovery.
