Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson has announced that a crucial 49-mile stretch of Highway 2, connecting Skykomish and Leavenworth, will close for several months. This decision comes after severe weather and flooding caused significant damage, with ongoing landslides creating further complications.
Ferguson emphasized the gravity of the situation. “It’s hard to estimate how long the highway will be closed. We know it’s vital for local businesses and lives. We’ll do everything we can to fix it quickly, but parts are literally underwater,” he explained.
This closure threatens the tourism-dependent economies of both Stevens Pass ski resort and the town of Leavenworth, especially as the holiday season approaches. Recent reports indicate that areas like Leavenworth could see a drastic decline in visitors, which could hurt local businesses that rely on holiday shoppers and skiers.
