Governor Kathy Hochul has emphasized that her top priority is the safety of all New Yorkers. Over the past 11 days, she has utilized every available state resource to ensure the safety of correction officers, the incarcerated population, and local communities throughout New York.
In collaboration with a mediator, the state has reached a consent award aimed at addressing several concerns raised by correction officers. This agreement will help restore safe operations within the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS). It also respects the rights of those incarcerated and works to prevent future unsanctioned work stoppages.
The Governor expressed her deep gratitude for the hard work of correction officers, civilian DOCCS employees, National Guard personnel, and other staff members who have worked diligently to maintain order in correctional facilities during these challenging times.
