Hyderabad: Governor Jishnu Dev Varma is calling for a clear strategy to tackle climate change and cut down greenhouse gas emissions. He believes this approach could greatly benefit our economy and environment.
In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s global climate vision, the Governor stressed the need for teamwork across various sectors. Everyone from Energy and Transport to Industry and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) has a role in boosting renewable energy and improving energy efficiency. “Energy efficiency could cut climate change impacts by over 40%,” he highlighted.
To enhance this climate plan, the Governor proposed several actions. First, he suggested aggressive tree planting initiatives led by the Forest and Environment Department. The goal? Increase Telangana’s green cover to 50% by 2047. He also recommended awareness campaigns that engage the public and private sectors, with special programs aimed at women and students through schools and colleges. This is essential for promoting energy-saving habits and sustainable practices.
Recently, A Chandra Sekhara Reddy from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) shared insights on energy efficiency measures with the Governor. He discussed BEE’s Standards and Labelling (S&L) program, which oversees 39 appliances. Of these, 16 are mandatory, including air conditioners, fans, and refrigerators.

Climate change affects everyone, and recent studies show that cities like Hyderabad are particularly vulnerable. According to a report by the Indian Ministry of Earth Sciences, rising temperatures could lead to increased heat waves and floods in urban areas.
Experts stress the importance of immediate action. For instance, Dr. Aniruddha Shukla, an environmental scientist, states, “Cities must adopt energy-efficient technologies to combat these changes. Each small step counts.”
Social media is buzzing with discussions about these initiatives. Many users are sharing their own energy-saving tips, while others voice support for more green initiatives. Online platforms can play a crucial role in spreading awareness and engaging communities.
With a dedicated approach and collective action, Telangana has a chance to lead the way in sustainability efforts. Focusing on a greener future not only helps the environment but fosters a resilient economy for generations to come.
