Syeda Rizwana Hasan, an adviser on environment, forest, and climate change, recently shared exciting plans to increase state-controlled forest coverage to 20% of Bangladesh’s total land. This move comes as part of a broader effort to combat climate change and promote biodiversity.
During a meeting in Dhaka, Hasan outlined that new afforestation projects would target riverine areas, coastal zones, and unused lands. These initiatives aim to not only expand forest coverage but also protect existing forests, conserve wildlife, and tackle climate issues.
To support these efforts, modern training programs for forest workers will be introduced. Proper training will ensure that these workers are equipped with the necessary skills to manage and protect forest resources effectively.
In a notable commitment to transparency, a digital monitoring system will be implemented. This system is designed to enhance the productivity of forest officials and ensure they follow established guidelines in their duties.
Among the exciting proposals is an Elephant Corridor Restoration program aimed at protecting endangered wildlife. The creation of a specialized orphanage for captive elephants also highlights the focus on wildlife conservation.
Community tourism initiatives in Madhupur were also discussed. This approach seeks to boost local economies while promoting nature conservation, fostering a balance between economic development and environmental protection.
According to recent data from the Forest Research Institute, forest cover is crucial for carbon sequestration, helping to reduce the impact of climate change. In fact, forests absorb approximately 1.1 billion tons of carbon dioxide each year, making their preservation vital.
Experts stress the importance of forests in offsetting climate change effects. Dr. Emily Carter, an environmental scientist, emphasizes that “increasing forest areas not only benefits wildlife but is also key to improving air quality and providing resources for local communities.”
