New Delhi: Recently, over 550 Indians have made their way from Iran to Armenia, while about 90 others crossed into Azerbaijan. This is part of a larger effort by the Indian government to ensure the safety of its citizens amid escalating conflict in West Asia.
Randhir Jaiswal, a spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, shared this news during a media briefing. Thanks to the hard work of Indian missions in the region, these evacuations have been successful. Jaiswal also expressed gratitude to the Armenian government for their support in these efforts.
During the ongoing crisis, India’s embassies in Tehran, Yerevan, and Baku have been busy coordinating transit, accommodation, and flights for those needing assistance. Airspace disruptions have complicated these efforts but the missions are committed to helping those in need.
As part of their ongoing support, the Indian Embassy in Tehran is also relocating students from higher-risk areas to safer regions within Iran. The government is actively reaching out to companies that employ Indian seafarers and fishermen to ensure their safety, too.
Since February 28, around 220,000 Indian passengers have returned from the West Asia and Gulf region as flights gradually resume. In the UAE, operations are beginning to pick up again, with multiple flights scheduled from Dubai and Abu Dhabi to India. Saudi Arabia and Oman have also reopened some flights, contributing to the ongoing repatriation efforts.
Interestingly, according to a recent report by the International Organization for Migration, the rate of migrants returning to their home countries has increased significantly during crises. It highlights the importance of government support in facilitating a safe return, especially for those in conflict zones. This aligns with the current situation where many Indians are relying on their government for help.

Amidst these evacuations, there have been reports of tragic incidents, such as the recent attack in Oman that claimed the lives of two Indian nationals. The Indian Embassy there is currently assisting their families with the process of repatriation.
