For example, the cost for the U.S. opening match against Paraguay can hit $4,105. Even tickets priced around $2,000 are common. For budget-conscious fans, some tickets start at $380 for matches like Curacao vs. Ivory Coast in Philadelphia.
FIFA has adopted dynamic pricing for this World Cup, which means ticket costs can fluctuate. FIFA President Gianni Infantino noted that demand for this year’s tournament is unprecedented, stating that it’s like “1,000 years of World Cups at once.”
While high prices have caused discontent, FIFA maintains that ticket sales help fund football development worldwide. Infantino argues that this income is vital for growing the sport, especially in countries that rely on support to maintain their football programs.
Many fans are upset about new pricey ticket categories introduced recently. Only a few tickets remain for some highly anticipated games, such as those featuring defending champions Argentina, Brazil, and Spain.
Prices for Argentina tickets can range from $2,475 to $2,925, while Brazil’s tickets are priced between $2,280 and $2,310. Critics call this pricing a “monumental betrayal” of loyal fans. FIFA insists it is addressing affordability but doesn’t back down from their pricing strategy.
Resale options are also available, with FIFA taking a 30% cut of any sales. In some cases, tickets for high-profile matches, like the final, can be listed for nearly $2.3 million per seat.
As of now, 17 group-stage matches are already sold out. Notable sell-outs include the tournament’s opener between Mexico and South Africa, plus matches in various U.S. cities.
The knockout stage tickets are not widely available either. For those lucky enough to find them, tickets for semifinals are steep, with prices around $10,000. For instance, a top-tier ticket for the Dallas semifinal is listed at $11,130.
The escalating ticket prices reflect the growing popularity of soccer, especially in North America, where the fan base is expanding rapidly. As communities rally around the sport, it’s worth noting that social media trends indicate a mixed response, with excitement mingled with frustration about costs.
According to recent surveys, 70% of soccer fans believe ticket prices for major events should be more affordable, while 40% still plan to attend the World Cup regardless of the costs.
