Grand Canyon University (GCU) is off to a great start this season, securing their second win with a 3-0 victory over UT Rio Grande Valley at Global Credit Union Arena. The Lopes showed impressive defense with 16 blocks while also delivering a solid offensive performance.
GCU logged 35 kills during the match, limiting the Vaqueros to a challenging -.040 attack percentage. Freshman Bella Nunez stood out, contributing 10 kills, 15 assists, eight digs, and six blocks. Junior outside hitter Anaelena Ramirez added seven kills and 19 digs, playing a crucial part in the team’s success.
Coach Kendra Potts praised Nunez for her adaptability on the court. “It’s tough to switch from offense to defense, but she’s managing well. Having 16 blocks in three sets speaks volumes about our teamwork,” Potts noted.
Sophomore setter Taylor Kubacak also played a key role, racking up 12 assists and bringing energy to the game. Potts commented, “Taylor communicates effectively and does much more than just setting. Her contributions have been invaluable.”
The team’s depth was evident, with graduate student Sophia Parlanti adding eight kills and three blocks, while Hayden Goodman led in blocks with an impressive 10. Freshman Macey Hughes also made her mark with six kills, complementing junior libero Bella Anderson’s steady defense, which included 10 digs.
GCU’s strategy included a 7-2 run to finish the second set, with a decisive 5-0 run to conclude the match. “Bella’s serving is vital to our success. She may not always show up on the stat sheet, but her calm presence helps anchor the team,” Potts said.
Looking ahead, GCU faces Gonzaga, who is also 2-0. According to Potts, “Gonzaga runs a strong offense and has excellent blocking skills. This match will be a tough test for us, and I’m excited to see how we rise to the challenge.”
