Grand Canyon University Athletics Dominates Northern Illinois: A Look at the Stellar Defensive Performance

While many eagerly await the weekend, the Grand Canyon University (GCU) Lopes had a different motive last weekend. After a tough loss where they allowed 90 points, the team focused on defense during their time off. This hard work paid off when they faced Northern Illinois on Monday night.

GCU dominated the game, winning 88-59. They held the Huskies to just 34.7% shooting and forced 21 turnovers, reminiscent of the defensive prowess seen in Bryce Drew’s earlier seasons as head coach.

“I hardly touched the ball,” said junior guard Makaih Williams, reflecting on the intense practice sessions over the weekend.

In the first half, the Lopes built a commanding lead, going up by 20 points at one stage. Their defense was a standout, with Northern Illinois struggling to find their rhythm, collecting 14 turnovers before halftime. Graduate power forward Wilhelm Breidenbach made an impressive impact, scoring a career-high 16 points in just 11 minutes off the bench.

“I was proud of our effort,” Drew noted. “The focus was much better tonight.”

GCU’s defense was stifling, holding the Huskies without a field goal for nearly nine minutes early in the game. Breidenbach’s ability to draw charges and stop shots, along with Nana Owusu-Anane’s steals, disrupted Northern Illinois consistently.

Missing graduate guard Brian Moore Jr. due to injury, Williams stepped up with 15 points, while freshman Evan Boisdur also shined in his GCU debut.

“Brian’s a big piece of our team,” Williams said. “I had to bring energy with him out.”

With their three-point shooting improving, GCU hit double-digit three-pointers for the second time in three games. Williams made three successful attempts, enhancing the team’s offensive output.

Breidenbach’s contributions were significant; he scored effectively while also engaging in key defensive plays. Senior guard Jaden Henley matched his contribution with 14 points, going perfect at the free-throw line.

“Wilhelm and Jaden set a strong tone,” Drew praised. “Their aggression and defense were crucial today.”

After a weekend filled with film study and practice, Drew had some uncertainty about how his relatively new team would respond. However, the Lopes maintained their defensive intensity, allowing them to seize control of the game.

As the game reached its climax, GCU’s lead soared to 35 points. The Lopes balanced their offense, showcasing contributions from various players. Drew emphasized building on this momentum as they head into their first road game against Saint Louis, a team known for its explosive offense.

In preparing for Saint Louis, Drew said, “We’ll need to defend at a high level. Their offense spreads you out.” GCU will look to continue their strong defensive play, something that will be crucial as the season progresses.

This match served as a reminder that effort and focus can yield positive results, and GCU is hoping to build on this foundation as they move forward in the season.
