Grand Canyon University (GCU) is riding high this week after earning its first-ever national top-25 ranking in softball. The Lopes are focused on winning the WAC regular-season championship for a second straight year.
In two recent games against Utah Tech, the Lopes showcased an incredible comeback spirit. They flipped early deficits into decisive victories, winning the first match 5-3 and then dominating the second with a 13-2 score. This doubleheader win marked GCU’s third WAC regular-season title under head coach Shanon Hays, and it was their 16th consecutive victory.
GCU’s success is backed by impressive stats. With a record of 39-6 and 17-2 in conference play, they’re currently among the top teams in the nation. Freshman Oakley Vickers shone in the first game, providing 4 2/3 innings of strong relief, while senior Meghan Golden secured her twelfth win in the second match.
Hays noted the team’s progress, crediting younger players stepping up as leaders. "This year, we had a lot of fresh faces. The girls who played last season have matured and taken on key roles," he said.
Historically, GCU is making a mark in the WAC, joining New Mexico State as one of the only teams to claim three regular-season titles in four years over the past two decades.
In the first game, the Trailblazers took an early lead thanks to Kinley Pappas’s home run. However, GCU fought back, with standout performances from Savannah Kirk, who went 4 for 5 in the doubleheader and leads the WAC with a .497 batting average. The Lopes kept pushing, ultimately clinching the title with a six-game lead over second-place Tarleton State.
In game two, Utah Tech briefly led again, but GCU responded with relentless scoring. The Lopes racked up 13 unanswered runs, featuring six doubles and two home runs. Golden’s pitching was critical as she strategically adapted her throws to outsmart the Trailblazers.
GCU’s journey this season reflects not just skill on the field but also resilience. Players like Makaiya Gomez, who had impressive batting in both games, highlighted the team’s growth and togetherness. "Even when the other team scores, we know we can hit back," she said.
Looking ahead, GCU’s next challenge will be their home finale, which also serves as Senior Day. They will honor their key players, including Golden and Gomez, who have been instrumental in their success.
As the Lopes aim for a strong finish, their achievements resonate with fans and illustrate the power of teamwork and determination in college sports.
