TEMPE, Ariz. – Grand Canyon University (GCU) dominated Milwaukee in their recent match, winning in straight sets: 25-20, 25-16, and 25-18. This victory improved their record to 8-2, showcasing their strong performance as they wrap up their nonconference games.
The Lopes displayed impressive teamwork, hitting an efficient .318 with a total of 38 kills. Graduate middle blocker Hayden Goodman was a standout, contributing nine kills on just 12 attempts, alongside five blocks and three service aces. Anaelena Ramirez, a senior outside hitter, added 10 kills and three digs, while sophomore middle blocker Aubrey Goodere secured seven kills at a .545 hitting percentage.
Head coach Kendra Potts emphasized the team’s progress in the middle positions. “Our focus this week was enhancing our middles, and it has paid off,” she noted. The Lopes’ block was formidable, largely thanks to effective distribution from sophomore setter Taylor Kubacak, who recorded 20 assists and provided two aces.
GCU’s defense and serving were key to their success, racking up eight aces in total. Goodman and junior libero Bella Anderson each contributed three aces. Anderson also helped stabilize the back row with seven digs, while freshman Bella Nunez led the defense with eight digs and three blocks.
The Lopes gained an advantage through strategic runs in every set. In the first, they turned a tied score of 14-14 into a 20-15 lead thanks to a 6-1 scoring run. The second set shifted when Goodman’s serve ignited a 7-1 run. In the final set, a surge of six points took the score to 22-14, leading to an ace from Goodman to secure the match.
Looking ahead, GCU will face No. 8 Arizona State to conclude their nonconference schedule. “This is an exciting match for us,” said Potts. “We’ve made significant strides since the start of the season.”
