Grand Canyon University Soars to 10-0 After Stunning Victory Over Harvard!

Grand Canyon University (GCU) had an impressive weekend, clinching a 2-1 victory over Harvard. This win brings their season record to an unbeaten 10-0, a first in the school’s history. The team’s strong pitching has been a key factor, allowing just 1.5 runs per game and achieving four shutouts.

Oakley Vickers was a standout player in the recent game. She pitched 5.2 innings, striking out eight batters and allowing only two hits. Vickers, now 3-0 with a 1.45 ERA, nearly notched another shutout, but gave up a solo home run to Harvard’s Alexa Wohr.

At the plate, GCU showed resilience. Sydney McCray, the leadoff hitter, walked and stole second base. Raegan Holtorf then moved her to third with a sacrifice bunt. Jada Cooper followed, fighting through a long at-bat that ended in an RBI single to right center. Cooper had a productive game, which included a nine-pitch walk and another single, putting her average at .435 with an on-base percentage of .567.

GCU’s second run came from pinch-hitter Alina Satcher, who managed to drop a ball into the infield where defenders could not make a play.

It’s noteworthy that the Lopes are currently ranked No. 27 in the nation. Their consistent performance makes them a strong contender for a top-25 ranking as the season progresses.

This season’s perfect start mirrors historical trends in college softball, where teams that begin strong often maintain that momentum. For instance, in a recent survey of college softball teams, 70% of teams that started off with a perfect record ended up in the postseason.

GCU’s next challenge comes Thursday night at their home field against San Diego, followed by multiple games over the weekend at the Purple Classic. Keep an eye on their journey – it could lead to more exciting milestones!
