Grand Canyon University (GCU) had a successful Saturday at the GCU Softball Stadium, winning both games of their doubleheader. They dominated Eastern Illinois with an 8-0 victory and followed it up with a 5-0 win against UC Riverside.
In the first game against Eastern Illinois, GCU scored in every inning, achieving a run-rule win. Senior Sydney McCray made a standout play. Traditionally a slap hitter, she opted for a powerful swing in the second inning, sending the ball deep into left-center field. It bounced off the wall, and McCray sped around the bases, scoring without sliding—an impressive moment that showcased her speed and determination.
Sophomore Ellie Pond also shined, hitting a home run in the fourth inning to bring her season total to three. The Lopes built their lead to 7-0, thanks to a two-out double from senior Emily Gonzalez, which set the stage for a run from freshman Izzy Rueda after two wild pitches.
Freshman pitcher Abi Jones closed the game with a perfect inning, earning her team its seventh run-rule victory of the season. Sophomore Oakley Vickers started strong, delivering five strikeouts and recording her sixth win.
In the second game, GCU faced UC Riverside. While they didn’t score as often, home runs from freshman Addison Shifflett and sophomore Jada Cooper provided enough to secure the win. Shifflett’s blast in the fourth inning extended their lead, while Gonzalez contributed with a double to help score more runs.
Sophomore pitcher Natalie Fritz secured her fourth win, showing great prowess by shutting out the Highlanders for four innings. Senior Maggie Place came in for relief and achieved her first save of the year, keeping UC Riverside from scoring despite their eight hits.
With these victories, GCU improved to 21-0, one of only four undefeated teams in the nation. Their performance highlights their strong start to the season, showcasing both power hitting and solid pitching.
As the team prepares for their next matchup against Eastern Illinois, expectations are high. Many fans and analysts are eager to see if GCU can maintain their unbeaten streak, a feat that emphasizes their skill and teamwork thus far.
