Grant Fisher Breaks 5K World Record at 2025 BU Valentine Invitational: A Historic Milestone for Distance Running

Grant Fisher has made history by breaking the 5,000m World Record at the 2025 BU Valentine Invitational with a stunning time of 12:44.09. This achievement eclipses the previous record of 12:49.60, held by Kenenisa Bekele since 2004.

Fisher’s performance also set a new American Record, surpassing Woody Kincaid’s mark of 12:51.61 from 2023. This marks Fisher’s second World Record in just a week; he set the 3,000m Indoor World Record in a thrilling race at the Millrose Games just days prior.

The race saw Fisher skillfully navigating through the pack while relying on pacers to maintain a strong pace. He strategically positioned himself behind other leaders, only to push ahead when the time was right. As the race approached the halfway point, he picked up the pace, leaving his closest competitor, Jimmy Gressier, trailing behind.

For the final 2,000m, Fisher ran solo, deftly moving around lap traffic. The crowd cheered him on as he maintained his rhythm and composure. In a powerful finish, he completed his last lap in 29.28 seconds, sealing his victory and record-breaking time.

Gressier finished second with a commendable time of 12:54.92, which also set a new French National Record. Yaseen Abdalla from Arkansas came in third, finishing as the top collegian at 13:09.99. Fisher’s remarkable feat will certainly inspire many in the world of athletics.
