Greens Commit to Gaza Campaign: Balancing Action and Advocacy

The federal Greens, under new leader Larissa Waters, are standing firm on key social issues, including their stance on Israel’s actions in Gaza. After a surprising election loss, where former leader Adam Bandt and several MPs lost their seats, the party is ready to focus not only on environmental issues but also on social justice.

Waters, who took over the leadership without opposition, believes the Greens can pursue both social and environmental goals simultaneously. “We can walk and chew gum at the same time,” she stated in a recent interview. The party plans to advocate for stronger environmental protection laws, which the government has promised to review this term.

Despite criticism over their past distractions from core environmental work, environmental groups are hopeful. Gavan McFadzean, from the Australian Conservation Foundation, highlighted that a renewed focus on climate is welcomed. He believes the Greens need to prioritize this in their public campaigns moving forward.

However, there’s concern that if the government opts to align more with the coalition for passing legislation, the Greens’ influence on environmental protections could wane. Waters stressed the urgency of addressing climate change and protecting nature, stating, “It’s time to move beyond outdated policies from the last century.”
