Greenwich Entertainment has secured the North American rights to UnBroken, a remarkable documentary detailing the harrowing survival of a family during Nazi Germany.
UnBroken will hit theaters on February 21, marking the directorial debut of Beth Lane. The film premiered at the 2023 Heartland Film Festival, where it won the award for Best Premiere Documentary Feature. It has also been showcased at notable festivals like DOC NYC, RiverRun International Film Festival, Julien Dubuque International Film Festival, and Berkshire International Film Festival, clinching audience awards at several of them.
The story follows the Weber siblings—Alfons, Senta, Ruth, Gertrude, Renee, Judith, and Bela—as they navigate the dangers of World War II. Their mother was taken to Auschwitz, a tragedy that led their father to make a desperate decision. He sent the children to Berlin, right into the heart of Nazi terror.
One sibling recalls, “After she was killed, my father said we had to go be baptized.” The film chronicles their incredible journey as they evade capture and fate after witnessing their mother’s tragic death.
According to the synopsis, “The children spent two years on their own in war-torn Germany. They faced hunger, loneliness, and danger, driven by their father’s promise that they would always stay together.” Their fight for survival takes a wrenching turn when they must declare themselves orphans to escape to America, ultimately leading to a separation that would last 40 years.
Lane expressed her gratitude, stating, “Working with Greenwich is an honor. This project, my directorial debut, transforms the pain of the past into a message of hope and empathy.”
The film features the talents of Beth Lane and Aaron Soffin as writers, with Lane serving as one of the executive producers. The editing team includes Aaron Soffin and Dina Guttmann, while music is composed by Jonathan Snipes.
Greenwich Entertainment’s Andy Bohn handled the acquisition negotiations with Submarine’s Ben Schwartz and Josh Braun.
